Downton Abbey Inspired Plate Covers

Downton Abbey’s 4th season  premieres in the U.S. on January 5, 2014. We are looking forward to another exciting season. To prepare for the season, we are hosting a garden party in our back yard complete with Downton Abbey Inspired Plate Covers.

These pretty little plate covers started out as a far less attractive decorations in our new home.

Several generations of women helped unpack our home. We had varied reactions to those dated light fixtures.

One of the older women in the family suggested I simple “Shoot ’em.”

One of the youngest told me I was lucky to have a princess light in my room.

Between the two sentiments came an idea I could live with. “Make them into cake plates,” my aunt suggested, “they already have handles.”

Now that is workable idea.

Recycled light fixtures add the charm to a garden party.

The “how to” is easy. Find a long brass bolt to replace the flush mount stem. Use washers as necessary to keep the bauble from rattling on the top of the light cover. Place on top of a clear serving plate. The plates used here are less than $2 each at Wal-Mart.

Alternatively, if you have a strong glue you trust,  affix the baubles to the top of the light covers.

Look how pretty these awful light fixtures are when they served up with a pot of tea.

Easy DIY project to salvage unsightly light fixtures.

Now, the table is set and refreshments are served. We have nothing to do, but wait for the show to begin.

Pass the time by catching up with past seasons, staring at the countdown calendar or find new tidbits of interest about the PBS hit drama  here.

Cheers Darlings.

    • Thanks Rita what a great compliment. That tea pot was one of my Grandmother’s favorite. At long last, I have a place to show it off!

    • The beauty of the 1950-1960 mid modern pieces, is that they are 100% in vogue right now. No re-purposing needed!!

    • Thanks Jen… I’d like to say it was my camera adding to the atmosphere, but those images are pretty true to form.

  1. I’m not creative at all so I always love to see ideas others have for repurposing! I could see those fixtures looking beautiful in my grandmothers old house, with all of the old details in the moulding and patterned ceilings, but in my now modern home…nope. Ha! Thanks for the inspiration.

    • I agree Mary, these have limited venue options. We just moved into an old Colonial Style home. They are a good fit here but would have been awful in our modern open floor plan home Florida.

    • Thanks Barbara!

    • Sheri Ann if you tire of trolling the antique shops– just buy an old fixer upper!!

    • Nicki– I agree!! They would be fabulous with your cupcakes!

    • Ya know Melanie, some of our Thanksgiving Guests felt the same way about them as light fixtures. Luckily I used the bold method so they can go up and down as I choose.
